Let me share with you today a visit we made a few years ago to a rose farm. Kenya is well known for an export market of fresh roses to many European countries. The Red lands Roses farm, established in 1996 , is located in Ruiri, 35 Kms from Nairobi. The region is ideal for flower farming because of the altitude of 1800 m and the fertile soil which are in good conditions.

Our farm tour started by meeting the farm workers and then heading to the greenhouse. Their roses are grown on 28 hectares. Since 2018, their greenhouses are on a 100% hydroponic system, with full recycling of water, preventing rejects of phosphates. They specialize in growing and exporting T-Hybrid and spray roses of the highest quality in a range of around 200 varieties.

We then had an extensive tour at the busy pack house where they make sure selecting and packing roses meet the best standards. In fact roses are harvested three times per day. And the cut stage of each stem ensures optimum quality. Once bunched, the roses are packed in a cold room using completely recyclable box and maintained below 5°C.

It was really a great and interesting visit. Red Lands Roses is renown for the quality of its roses produced and is among the first companies in Kenya using systems that ensure environmental sustainability. But like many businesses they are likely facing some challenges on the market during this corona virus pandemic.

Nice. I visited Kenya in 2016 I remember seeing many landscaping companies on the outskirts of Nairobi. I had done a taxi tour thru Kiberi and then then landed in the area of landscape beauty just belong it. Such a contrast. Thanks for sharing

What lovely photos. I’ve always wondered how roses are grown commercially. I hope all the small businesses survive Corona lockdowns. The world needs flowers, and husbands need to buy their wives flowers. Often. 🙂
