The Poutine is one of the most popular Canadian food. When it comes to poutine, the ingredients seem rather simple, but once you taste it, you can’t help yourself but eating and eating more of it…! Before our visit to Québec, we were told not to miss it so we were so impatient to give it a try. Mainly made of fried potatoes, cheddar cheese and gravy sauce, Canadian Poutine is perfectly delicious.

Poutine is a dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It emerged in Québec in the late 1950s in the Centre-du- Québec area, though its origins are uncertain and there are several competing claims of having invented the dish. ( Source : Wikipedia )

Well, poutine is a delicate subject on which opinions are very divided. Mostly known in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada, poutineries refer to Quebec. What makes the difference is the cheese bit, in real Quebec poutines, it has to make a noise under the tooth. To be honest, when you know how good can be Belgian or French fries, you consider it is a waste to drown them in the gravy 🙂

Your poutine looks great. I was referring to some fast food places that sell fries with grilled onions, sauce, pickles, mustard, and melted cheese on them. Some places call them “animal fries,” like, In n’ Out Burger in the USA. If you add crumbled hamburger on top of the fires they call them “roadkill fries.” They don’t put it on the menu .. the locals know what to order.

Thank you! And now, I’ve learnt something new. I’ve never heard about “roadkill fries”. That’s why I like to talk with the locals during travelling.

Yum! I miss authentic poutine. Most of the restaurants here in Cincinnati use tater tots, the cheese is too melted, and they throw in the meat along with the gravy. Not the same thing!

I have heard others speak about this dish lol – now I am curious – one day I will try.
We do have, like someone else mentioned, animal fries which is usually fries topped with a chili and cheese or bacon and cheese … I have not seen with gravy though – that is a weird concoction for me to imagine lol – I’m just going to have to try it.

Maybe it’s time for you to give it a try ! Lol. For me, I didn’t have the chance to taste “animal fries” yet… Let’s hope that after the covid -19 pandemic comes to an end, we could travel and try these dishes. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I live on the other side of Canada. We still have poutine here, but I suspect the real thing in Quebec will be just that much better. I am planning a trip there soon, but being on the hunt for a good poutine is top of my To Do list.

So many versions of this. One of our family’s favorites is a duck poutine at a restaurant in Burlington, Vermont, not far from Canada!
